Retiring to warmer climes: Why the Gold Coast is sunnier than Florida
It was Jerry Seinfeld’s parents, Morty and Helen, that helped put Florida on the map as a retirement haven. Some of this sitcom’s funnier episodes – who could ever forget a drugged-up Elaine screaming out Stella? – were centred on Del Boca Vista, a fictional retirement community.
In real life, there are no shortage of ‘Mortys’ and ‘Helens’, as I’m finding out on a US trip in my capacity as a financial adviser where I’m speaking to many individuals dreaming of a Florida retirement.
This southern US state has plenty of attractions, but I think a good argument can be mounted to say Queensland’s Gold Coast – our retirement haven – has more to offer.
So, let’s compare these two sunny destinations and, in the process, hopefully help Australian retirees make an informed decision about pulling up stumps and heading to the Gold Coast.
Climate:
Florida and southern Queensland boast enviable climates, making them ideal havens for retirees seeking sunshine and mild winters. Florida’s sub-tropical climate offers an average of 230 to 300 days of sunshine a year, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 33 degrees celsius. Similarly, the Queensland coastal region, often dubbed the Gold Coast, enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine annually, with temperatures hovering around 25 degrees celsius. Retirees from Australia will find the climate in Queensland, particularly on the Gold Coast, welcoming, with the bonus of fewer storms compared with Florida’s coastal areas. [More storms hit Florida than any other US state. In 2022, Hurricane Ian cost 150 lives in Florida and losses were estimated around $US113 billion, the costliest in Florida’s history.]
Cost of Living: Dollars and sense
When it comes to the cost of living, Queensland holds a significant advantage over Florida. Although both destinations offer relatively affordable living compared with other major cities, the Gold Coast’s lower cost of living and proximity to healthcare facilities make it an attractive option for those looking to stretch their retirement savings. Additionally, Australia’s universal healthcare system provides retirees with peace of mind and access to quality medical care without the need for expensive private insurance plans.
Lifestyle: Beaches and beyond
In terms of lifestyle, Queensland and Florida offer a wealth of activities and amenities to keep retirees entertained. From pristine beaches and world-class golf courses to cultural attractions and gourmet dining, these destinations cater to a diverse range of interests. However, Queensland’s laid-back Aussie charm and stunning natural beauty, particularly on the Gold Coast, set it apart, offering retirees a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. From exploring the Great Barrier Reef to the north to bushwalking in the hinterland, Queensland’s lifestyle is quintessentially Australian, with a touch of tropical paradise thrown in.
Retirement communities: Luxury living Down Under
Although Florida may be renowned for its luxury retirement communities, the Gold Coast offers its own brand of upscale living for retirees. From waterfront apartments to gated estates, retirees can find luxury accommodations to suit their preferences. With state-of-the-art amenities and stunning ocean views, retirement living on the Gold Coast rivals that of its American counterpart, offering retirees the opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds – sunshine and luxury, all within the comforts of home.
Conclusion: Finding your retirement paradise
Although Florida has a certain allure, Queensland’s Gold Coast offers a comparable – if not superior –retirement experience. With its favourable climate, affordable cost of living and unique lifestyle offerings, the Gold Coast provides retirees all the benefits of a sunny retirement destination.
